Hotel Recommendations For Indonesia Island Travel
Hotels in Sorong, Lubuan Bajo, and Maumere
The Swiss Bell Hotel is only ten minutes from the airport and the marina. It is a big modern corporate sort of hotel that is popular with travelers in transit for its predictable quality and low price, around $40. Sorong is not very developed and there is not a lot of competition. The Swiss Bell is not something to write home about, but it is comfortable, clean and convenient. They have free wi-fi throughout the property, but you might find you need to go one of the common areas to get a strong consistent signal.
Marina Mamberamo is another corporate style option to consider with a similar price located right on the Marina. They also offer free wifi. Hotel City View is a smaller modern option with free wifi and slightly higher prices than Mamberamo and Swiss Bell. If you want a place with a little more character, check out the Luxio hotel. The rooms are very nicely decorated and like the others they offer free wifi and airport pickup. The price is higher, around $55, and it’s a little further away from the airport and marina.
Lubuan Bajo Hotels
Jayakarta Suites is a modern corporate style hotel 15 minutes from the airport. They offer free airport pickup and wifi in the common areas only. This is not such a bad alternative to the relatively common offering of wifi in your room that does not work. They also have pool and a jogging track for sporty types and flat screen tvs in the rooms in case you want to catch up on Indonesian soap operas. The hotel costs around $70 a night and offers a free breakfast buffet.
The Golo Hilltop hotel is a nice option if you want something more home-y. Not a corporate type place, this 10 room boutique hotel is owned by two Dutch women. It is one kilometer outside of town and offers fantastic ocean views and bungalows with private balconies. They have free wifi and a pool. Price per night is around $40 including airport pickup and breakfast.
Maumere is a quiet fishing village and there are only a few options. The Coconut Gardens Beach Resort has a rustic feel to the cute beach front bungalows. It is only around $30 a night. They offer free airport pickup and breakfast but no wifi. You can relax in a hammock and watch the ocean knowing you have a good excuse not to answer emails for a day. If you want a more modern option, we recommend the Capa Maumere, but it is pricey – around $100 a night including airport shuttle. The Capa has 35 rooms. They offer wifi, but like a lot of remote places in Indonesia, it is not strong or consistent so be prepared to exercise some patience.
